During that time, internet connection has limited access unlike today. The only way I got to know about the information pertaining other states tourism places are through TV and Radio. Now, I am early 30 series of age and still struggle with time to seek for my availability to explore and visit all the states in Malaysia.
In this article I would like share my experience having quality time in Penang Malaysia that I ever visited and experience an awesome and quality time with my family.
Penang Island
The top state in Malaysia I suggest you to visit is Penang Island. Located at the north part of peninsular Malaysia. It takes you about 2-4 hours from KLIA by using car. Penang becomes the second richest state after Kuala Lumpur & Selangor. Hence you might shocked if once you arrived in Penang, the vibe is same like what you felt in Kuala Lumpur.
Penang Island actually divided into two separated district/area/region. Island region and Mainland region. Georgetown (Capital of Penang) located on the island meanwhile Butterworth city (Another city in Penang) located on the mainland. Both them separated by the Penang Strait. Without wasting time lets get started to go through this article What You Enjoy The Most in Penang Island?
How to Travel From KLIA
Three options on how you can travel to Penang Island from KLIA/Terminal Bersepadu Selatan (KL Bus Terminal)
- Bus – RM30 – RM50 one way
- ETS Train – RM90 – RM100 one way
- Car Pooling/Car Rental – Depended on Budgets
As a local people, travel to the north by using our own car/vehicle might be the most practical.
If you are foreigner backpacker, I will suggest you to use either bus or ETS Train from TBS.
If you travel to Penang using ETS Train, you should stop at the Butterworth Railway Station before proceed to take shuttle bus to travel to Georgetown (Located on the island)
Beautiful and Happening Beach
Penang Island have a few beautiful beach that you must visit. Batu Ferringhi is the must attraction location among tourists around the world.
Apart from enjoy the fresh air, there are also small restaurants and street foods you may try as well.
On top of that, souvenirs stores are located along the beach that you may visit to buy some goods from Penang Island as a gift to your friends and family. I visited Batu Ferringhi beach in 2018 and I still remember the moment I try to ride a Poney Horse or “Kuda Padi” in Malay.
Famous of Char Kueh Tiow
The most famous in town, Penang Char Kueh Tiaw (Malay version) is another level. The menu was origin from Chinese Cuisine but in Malay version.
This menu a little bit wet with more spice and additional ingredients added. Only the portion was quite sad for me. But it is okay then. We still can buy 2 Char Kueh Tiow with reasonable price in Penang in 2024!
Pasembor
This is pasembor. It just like a normal Indian Rojak we purchased in Kuala Lumpur before visit Penang. But this menu using a special sauce that make this cuisine authentic.
Nasi Kandar
Another super and authentic foods that you must try in Penang is Nasi Kandar. It looks like “Nasi Campur” in Malay. This menu using a normal white rice as the main elements plus variety of side dishes.
This menu origin from the mamak community. The secret and variety of spices added into those side dishes make this menu have their own special taste.
The price also differ from one place to another. The more dishes you take, the more money you need to pay. For me personally I will take white rice with chicken/mutton curry + salted eggs + salad. This will cost me less than RM15.
Friendly Local Peoples
Most of the time during my staycation in Penang Island, we found very friendly peoples. Malay Chinese and Tamil, all them are friendly and awesome. For outsider especially from English speaking countries, most of local peoples in Penang able to speak basic English thus you have not to worry about the language barrier in here.
Majority population in Penang Island is Chinese followed by Malay and Indian (Who speaks Tamil).
